Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOS) account for most U.S. livestock production. The large scale helps keep cost down, but untreated manure spread on farm fields in the surrounding area overwhelm many of our nation’s watersheds. Algae blooms that are increasingly toxic, weed-choked rivers, contaminated aquifers and drinking water are all linked to upstream livestock. Climate impacts and other air emissions also have CAFOs under scrutiny from regulatory agencies, advocacy groups, investors and consumers.
